The evening has arrived and it is still boiling hot. How come these little ones can be so jolly? I wonder if they know that I am Tossakan, the mighty ruler of Lonka the glorious city. Angles and demons are trembling with fear only hearing my name back in those days.

Now go! Go away! Go play with Sahassadecha. This friend of mine has thousand faces and two thousand hands, while I only have ten faces and twenty hands. He has a magical cudgel blessed by the god Brahma; the top of cudgel pointed at any living creature, it dies. But when the bottom pointed to the dead, it brings the dead back to life. I was so disappointed when Sahassadecha lost to Hannuman. That bloody white ape transformed to innocent little monkey, broke the magical cudgel and easily killed him. Damn, I was also fooled by Hannuman so many times that I lost my count. I was not sure which one was the worst, sneaking in and burning my Lonka city or stealing the heart box.

I can’t help feeling angry thinking back about those hard fought battles. I have to remind myself time after time that I and other giant demon Kings are appointed an honorable duty in this life as the guardians of Wat Phra Kaew. Goddamnit, it’s been two-hundred years and we still haven’t fully adjusted to this role. We were warriors and used to do nothing else but fight. Now we have to be still, with grimacing mouth and wide-opened eyes greeting visitors.

Children are still running, taking pictures and fooling around.

One little girl looks at me puzzlingly. Sweet smile appears on her rosy cheeks.

I have to admit this is damn delightful.

Should I wave back at her?

*Six pairs of 12 giant demon kings guard six gates of Wat Phra Kaew’s main temple (including a pair of Tossakan and Sahassadecha at the South gate). All of them are approximately five-meters-tall cement statues decorated with colored porcelains and glasses.

**The idea of giant demon kings as guardians of Wat Phra Kaew is modeled after that of Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn). The original pair of giant demon king at Wat Arun is also Tossakan and Sahassadecha.
